I never would have gotten through it if it weren't for a professor who worked through MacIntyre with me for a semester. So I only had to talk a bit about what I thought was most important and then the prof would tell me everything I got wrong. :-D

I think that Kathleen's comment was meant in reference to adoption and not about one's responsibilities when one is "given" a child with special needs. At least I understood her to be saying that she did not feel called to choose a child with special needs, but has certainly become the best mother for the daughter God gave her.

great post! I appreciated it. I am sure there are many well-meaning people in the Quiverful movement who are not neglecting their children, but the ideology behind it is fundamentally flawed.

Kathleen: Not every one is meant to parent a child with special needs.... well..... maybe that's true. Maybe. But... when you're given one, it doesn't really matter whether you thought you were one of those people are not. You, in all your weakness, will now BECOME the right people. This is what my parents had to do with my youngest brother when he was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome after he was born.

Can it rip apart a marriage? Maybe, but then, most suffering can rip apart a marriage. It always CAN. The question is not CAN something do us harm or be very difficult, but really: will we let it? Our culture avoids anything that isn't comfortable and easy, but that is perhaps our biggest downfall.

It's still hard for my parents to parent my brother. It has definitely caused tough spots as a family and in their marriage. It's also been on of the most beautiful, redemptive things to happen to our family. It just depends on how you respond to the difficulty.

yep, I second the advice of making yeast in your own kitchen, if you bake bread everyday or everyother day it's the best way. Simply take a small piece of your dough, add flour and water to it, let it raise overnight. Done! Yours is the tasty healthy bread again... ;)

Mmm, fresh bread. As far as cheap meals go, I'm all about the beans and rice. With the right spices and veggies mixed in, it's quite delicious.

If you never want to have to buy yeast again try making your own sourdough starter with just flour and water. I made mine a year ago (I was no expert at the time) and it's still alive and raising some tasty loaves...and I don't have to buy any yeast! If you don't want to make it yourself you can get some for the price of postage @ http://www.carlsfriends.org/ . If it makes you feel better I make all of my artisan loaves with the cheapest store brand flour possible...it makes really great loaves. I use whole wheat for daily sandwich loaves though. Once your starter is up and running you can also use it to replace the buttermilk in all of your quick breads, it reacts with the baking soda to raise them the same way buttermilk does and it's a lot cheaper. I've used it successfully in pancakes, muffins and even chocolate cake! It has, by far, become my most versatile and economical kitchen staple. There are also a lot of people that swear by the health benefits of the bacteria in the starter.

I like the "no knead" aspect of your bread recipe, I suppose you could convert it to use with a starter as well. I'll give it a try sometime, thanks!
