Anna Karenina
Have you ever read Anna Karenina?
I would love as many honest answers as possible, but must warn you that if you say “yes” I might just pressure you into allowing me to post your thoughts on the book.
I first read Anna Karenina 7 years ago and fell in love. Now I am thinking of re-reading the book and dedicating the month of August to posting about it. Some posts may have titles such as “Contraception,” “Financial Organization,” or “Gardening,” but all will in some way be tied back to Anna Karenina.
You certainly don’t have to read my posts, but why would you think that it will be boring? You wouldn’t think that if you’d read much Tolstoy! So tell me, have you read Anna Karenina? If not, why not? If so, what did you think of it?
I’ve never read Anna Karenina, although I did try some ten years ago. I think I liked it, but was just overwhelmed by it (and I don’t know that I actually “got” it!). I’d be really interested in reading posts that tie back to it! I really like seeing how what we sometimes think of as “contemporary” issues have been addressed historically.
Also, maybe for those of us who haven’t managed to read it, an introductory post describing the story line would be helpful. Perhaps you’ll inspire us to give it a(nother) shot!
I have never read, nor have I tried. You might inspire me to try it, though!
I read the sparknotes of it in high school. I’m not too proud of that. But I think this is a really interesting idea! I actually haven’t read much tolestoy at all, but I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I’ve heard Oprah and Megan Mullally’s thoughts on it-as Oprah presented Anna Karenina as one of her book club’s books…but I’ve never read it. I might pick it up now that you mention it!
I started to read it a few years ago and I was immediately swept up in the drama. It certainly reels you in quickly! I think I was unable to finish it because of classes or work or something of that sort, and I don’t even have a copy of it at my house now. (I was reading my brother’s.) I definitely want to actually read it all the way through, though, and I’m looking forward to your Anna-inspired posts!

I purchased it, a long long time ago, with the intent of reading it… but I have not. I have a very long plane ride from the West Coast to Bali – maybe that is the long read I need?!
Is it ridiculous to admit I can’t remember? I read War and Peace, but I can’t remember if I read Anna. I think I’ll go check it out from the library and then I can contribute an educated opinion.
This is so lame…but I heard of it only when I was reading “Last Song” by Nicholas Sparks. I may have to read it.
I read it and loved it! Anna Karenina and Jane Eyre are my favorite classic novels.
I haven’t read it, but wanted to at some point. I’m not sure why the desire went away… I might have to add it to the summer reading list.
I have not read Anna Karenina. Guess I should. Maybe once I knock my remaining exams out and write my dissertation I’ll get back into pleasure reading!

Anna Karenina is the absolute best! I read it so many years ago and my copy looks similar to your picture – well worn!
I read it 4-5 years ago and I now consider it one of my all-time favorites, although I can’t remember many of the details anymore. I’d love to have the time to read it again someday, although at the moment I have too many other books in my pile.
I also read War and Peace by Tolstoy and loved it as well. When I went to Russia a few years ago I got to see Tolstoy’s house (now a museum) and it was one of the highlights of my trip.
Have you read anything else by him, and would you recommend it?
Oh, now I have to fight the jealousy about your trip to Russia and seeing Tolstoy’s house! Did you ever blog about that?
I also liked _War and Peace_ as well as some of his short stories. The only other thing that I read was _The Kreutzer Sonata_ and while it was interesting, it is quite different from anything else that I’d read by Tolstoy. I’d only recommend it as a weird read.
